Be Present and in the Moment: Reduce Your Screen Time
By Miss Sophal Sok
Learning a new language is fun, but challenging. It takes time and commitment day and night to be proficient. It requires passion and purpose to keep you focused and willing to explore more aspects of the language. No matter how long you have been learning a language, it’s almost nothing if you can’t be understood because of bad pronunciation. These are two important benefits of good pronunciation:
1. Good pronunciation helps others understand you more quickly
Most people experience difficulty pronouncing words, phrases, or sentences correctly, which leads to misunderstandings. Good speaking doesn’t mean you have good pronunciation. It’s important to keep in mind that more speaking practice does not always mean more pronunciation practice. Speaking practice helps you learn how to make natural sentences in real conversations. However, pronunciation is all about making sure you sound clear and easy to understand.
2. Good pronunciation can help improve your social skills
Looking back to your purpose of learning a new language: traveling, business, teaching, or interpersonal communications, it can sometimes be difficult to feel confident speaking in another language because you feel shy or worry about making a mistake or being misunderstood. You might not want to talk to people whom you feel you are having difficulty talking with. There might be a lot of “what?”, “Huh?”, “Can you say that again?”, etc. Sometimes, your partner might also misunderstand the meaning of some words that have the same spelling but different pronunciation and meaning, like the words “address” (verb) and “address” (noun). However, having good pronunciation will make you become confident and express yourself freely.
With good pronunciation, your self-esteem will develop as you achieve better communication with the people around you. Practice and learn good pronunciation now and reap the benefits of learning a new language!
