Volunteering is a kind of activity that allows youths to explore themselves and find out what they are really passionate about through real experience. There is no monetary benefit but it is very useful for students to grow themselves. Through participating in volunteer activities, they will gain access to bigger opportunities in the future. There are four main reasons why students should experience volunteer activities.
1. Volunteering helps students learn new things that they have never learned before and helps them identify what they really love.
There are various positions in each volunteer program. In every new role, students can learn new things. If students just focus on studying, they can only learn about the content of each lesson and do the assigned activities by the teachers. Volunteering activities allow students to experience something that is not taught in class.
2. Volunteering helps students to connect with new people and high potential people in the society.
In volunteering activities, students are able to communicate with new people that they know such as the organizers, other fellow volunteers, and various stakeholders. Through communicating with new people, it allows the students to expand their communication skills and open the door to larger opportunities in the future through those connections. They can also get experiences from everyone around them.
3. Volunteering helps students contribute to society and be better.
The majority of youths want to contribute to society, but they do not know how to start.
Volunteering is the key to contributing to society. We do not have to be rich to contribute back to society, but we can use our capacity as youths to help build a better community in society through some activities such as volunteering in charity projects, environmental projects, educational projects, and many other projects.
4. Volunteering helps students develop their soft and hard skills.
When students join the volunteering program, they are guided to do things in real practice. In order to complete those responsibilities in real practice, they are required to use what they have learned from their leaders. For example, if the students applied to work as speaker coordinator but he/she never experienced communicating professionally with other people before. The leaders will guide him/her to practice it first before communicating to the real speakers which allows the volunteers to learn new things day by day.
For the past 5 years, I have joined various volunteering programs and they helped me to become better from one year to another. They made me see the bigger future of mine. I wish I could know the importance of volunteering sooner so that I could join more to help the society to be better. I hope that this content would help students out there to understand more about volunteering and take some time to get involved in the volunteering activities. Even though I cannot have much time to join volunteering activities anymore, I like to remind students about the importance of these social activities so that it could help them improve themselves in the future.
